Mental Skills Training for Triathletes

Practical, psychologist-led mental skills to help triathletes understand and respond more effectively to pressure, difficult sessions, race-day problems and post-race disappointment

Not Another “Change Your Mindset” Course
Practical Psychology for Real Triathlon Problems

This course is not built on motivational slogans or generic advice about unlocking your potential, being fearless and tougher, thinking positively or getting your mindset right.

It is based on psychology and designed to help triathletes understand why difficult thoughts, emotions and responses arise during training, racing and after racing. These experiences are part of the sport. The key is learning how to respond to them effectively.

The aim is to support better performance while helping athletes enjoy their training, respond more constructively when things go wrong and prevent triathlon from negatively affecting the rest of their lives.

Mental Skills for Training, Racing and After Racing

Training

Manage expectations, maintain motivation, respond constructively to difficult sessions and prevent training frustration from affecting the rest of your day.

Racing

Work with pre-race nerves, maintain attention, make effective decisions under fatigue and reset when pacing, nutrition, weather or other parts of the plan go wrong.

After Racing

Review performance without becoming trapped in criticism, manage disappointment and use what you have learned to approach the next training block more constructively.

Who is this Course For?

This course is for committed age-group triathletes who:

  • Put too much pressure on training or one important race;

  • Let a poor session affect the rest of their day;

  • Overanalyse training data or race results;

  • Have started to lose enjoyment during long training blocks;

  • Struggle to reset when pacing, nutrition, weather or equipment problems change the race;

  • Carry training frustration home;

  • Want to keep improving without allowing triathlon to take over the rest of their life.

You do not need to relate to every point. The course is for athletes who want better ways to handle the mental demands of training and racing.

What You Will Learn to Do

The course will show you how to:

  • Review a poor session without letting it ruin the rest of your day;

  • Reduce the pressure created by rigid expectations;

  • Recognise when overthinking is no longer helping;

  • Reset when pacing, nutrition, weather or equipment problems change the race;

  • Focus on the next useful decision rather than everything that has gone wrong;

  • Debrief a race without reducing it to the finishing time;

  • Keep pursuing demanding goals without taking training frustration home.

The focus will be on practical responses you can use during a real training block and on race day.

Developed by a Psychologist Who Understands Triathlon

I have been involved in triathlon for more than 35 years, completing my first half-distance race at 18 and my first full-distance race the following year. Since then, I have represented New Zealand as an age-group athlete, achieved podium finishes in Australia, New Zealand and overseas, and recorded top-10 age-group finishes in half- and full-distance events.

For the past five years, I have also supported age-group and elite triathletes in my work as a registered psychologist.

This course brings together my professional experience in psychology with a long personal history in the sport.
